Aida Tejada

ARTIST STATEMENT

“I explore various alternatives to reality, trying to bring the viewer closer to the human beings hidden behind those faces I portray and the familiar landscapes we often traverse without noticing our surroundings.

My goal is to capture the essence of what is in front of the lens and travel together with the images toward that which is lying in the deepest depths, far beyond the world of appearances.

For each photograph the subject is irrelevant, only the meaning it expresses at any given moment in time matters. The intention is to present these images as narrative essays.

The composition of these photographs is done “in-camera,” not through composite layers resulting from computer-generated editing. The visual effects in my images are created using reflective surfaces and by varying exposure time.

BIOGRAPHY

From the Dominican Republic. Graduated with a degree in psychology from Madrid University. I later obtained a Masters in Communications from Paris University.

Since 2008, I have immersed myself fully in the photographic medium. I blend my “experimental” style with professional training acquired in workshops with American photographer, Bryan Peterson and the International Center of Photography in New York. I am currently exploring different manual transfer techniques learned from artist Bonnie Lothka.
